LEISURE TIME
Strike Zone
BY GREG PALLANTE
Scott Deliantis was born in Astoria, Queens, 56 years ago and joined his first league team at age 14 when his father fell ill and his team needed a replacement. He moved to Bergen in 1965 and went on to win numerous titles.
Ironically, after being sidelined by his own injuries, the Bergen County Bowling Hall of Famer and Bergen County Bowling Association manager only stepped back onto the lanes himself when the kids he now coaches provided inspiration.
"I've been bowling since I was 5," says Deliantis. "When I was 14, I was asked to step in for my father on a team in New York. I went in with a 152 average, and by the time the season ended, I was up to 185.
"When I moved to Bergen, I formed a league team and a tournament team. The league team, named after my trucking company -- Deliantis Trucking in River Edge -- has been active for 36 years, with 16 first-place finishes." "A lot of people don't consider bowlers to be athletes," says Deliantis. "In the last 10 years, I've had a hip, knee, and rotator cuff replaced -- worn out from the sport. I sat out for four years and didn't plan on coming back until the kids program I started really pushed me."
Deliantis recalls a bowler who gave free lessons to kids on Saturdays. "I learned more from him than anyone else. While I was hurt, I got the idea to start The D's Team kids program. I decided to do it, but still couldn't bowl. Then I realized that the kids weren't going to learn without visual aids. So I got up, I started working out and got out there on the lanes."
Where to Bowl
Bergen has four individually owned centers and three national chains. Deliantis says that individually owned centers charge a little less for open bowling and can be a little more personal.
